A program of study (POS) is an academic plan that lists the courses you must complete in order to graduate with a degree in the major you have chosen.

A student can download a plan of study for the core curriculum, or for certain majors, that offers pre-filled course requirements and drop-down boxes that show which courses can be chosen as electives. The form also has space to record the semester the course was taken and grade earned.

Download to Adobe Reader/Acrobat and save a copy prior to filling out the POS. The POS can be saved to your computer for future use, emailed, or printed.

You can request a change in home campus online through a form in BannerWeb. To request the change, access the appropriate form by following these steps:

Holds prevent registration and can be put on your account for a variety of reasons. To check for holds on your account, complete the following steps every semester prior to advising weeks so that you are ready to register when your time ticket opens

1. Log in to .
2. Select Student Profile on main page.
3. In the top right corner of the screen, look for the hold icon.
4. Select the hold icon to review current holds.

The Registrar will post your registration time ticket during Advising Weeks. This is the window of time during which you are able to register. To view your registration time ticket, follow these steps:

• Select on Nighthawk Course Scheduler from the main landing page.
• Select view Prepare for Registration.
• Select the term you want to register for and click continue.

Add/Drop

Add/Drop is the schedule adjustment period beginning the first day of each term and continuing for five days. During the add/drop period, courses can be removed or added without academic penalty.

Keep in mind that dropped courses do not count towards attempted hours and if adding courses, tuition and fees must be paid at the time of registration.

Before adding or dropping a course, it can be helpful to consult with your assigned academic advisor.

Withdrawals

After the Add/Drop period has ended students have the option to withdraw from a course, without academic penalty, until the midpoint of the term. Withdrawal from a course before the published midpoint will result in a grade of “W” being recorded on the student's academic transcript, but the semester hours will not enter the grade point average.

If a student withdraws from a course after the deadline, a grade of “WF” will be recorded on the student's transcript. A WF is treated as an F in computing a student's grade point average.

Students should consult with their academic advisor and financial aid before withdrawing from a course or multiple courses. Withdrawing from a course could impact degree progression and financial aid. Failure to understand and adhere to the Standards of Academic Progress may result in a loss of financial aid.

The maximum number of credit hours a student will be able to register for is 20 credit hours in fall and spring and 16 hours in the summer. Students with learning support requirements, RHSC deficiencies, or those not in good standing can have a maximum of 17 credit hours in fall and spring semesters.

A student wanting to complete more than 20 hours a semester must have completed two or more semesters with a course load of more than 15 hours with an institutional GPA of 3.0 or higher. A minimum of 2.5 overall GPA must be earned as well to request a course overload.

The course overload request must be approved by the student’s advisor, department head, and dean.

A student whose overall GPA is below a 2.0 or who has a learning support requirement or required high school curriculum (RHSC) requirement and wishes to complete 17 or more credit hours in a semester must have written permission from their academic advisor, department head, and dean.

Course repeats are allowed at the University of North Georgia. Below is additional information on course attempts and overall grade point average (GPA):

If a student repeats a course, only the grade with the most recent attempt of the course is used for calculating the overall GPA and applied towards graduation requirements for all degrees and certificate programs. This is true even if the grade for the most recent attempt is lower than the grade for the previous attempt.

For example, if a student earns a D in a course, and upon repeating it earns a grade of F, the F grade will be calculated in the overall GPA and not the D. Students may only attempt a course three times at 1688¿ª½±Íø regardless of whether a W or a grade was earned in the course.

Some students may have Required High School Curriculum (RHSC) deficiencies because they have not completed all the required college preparatory curriculum courses in high school. RHSC deficiencies will still appear as College Preparatory Curriculum (CPC) deficiencies on the tranguid in Red.

The Board of Regents policy states that students admitted to the Institution with RHSC deficiencies must complete all RHSC requirements before earning 30 semester hours of college-level level credit. Students who accumulate 30 or more semester hours of college-level credit before completing all RHSC requirements may not register for other courses unless they also register for the appropriate course that meets the deficiency. These students will have a hold placed on their accounts for assisted registration.

Students with RHSC deficiencies in social science, natural sciences, or foreign language may fulfill the deficiency by completing a collegiate level course in the subject area with a grade of C or better or passing standardized examinations such as SAT Subject tests, FLATS, CLEP or DSST in the appropriate area. More Information on available examinations and the necessary scores to obtain credit.

Courses taken to remove RHSC deficiencies in science, natural sciences, or foreign language may also count towards meeting degree requirements if taken fall 2014 forward. Prior to fall 2015, the student must satisfy the RHSC deficiency using one of the courses specified in their matriculated 1688¿ª½±Íø catalog. Effective fall 2015, there are no specific approved courses to satisfy the deficiency, and the advisor may refer to the chart below:

Good Standing: students having a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 after earning more than 18 credit hours in all courses attempted with grades of A, B, C, D, F, or WF.

Academic Warning: students having earned 18 credit hours or less and a GPA below 2.0.

• Academic warning is a part of 1688¿ª½±Íø’s Early Alert Program and the student remains in good standing.

Academic Probation: students having earned 19 or more credit hours and a cumulative GPA less than 2.0.

• Students on Probation must earn a minimum semester GPA of 2.00 for each subsequent semester until good academic standing is achieved to remain on continued probation and avoid suspension.

Continued Probation: students on Academic Probation due to having a cumulative GPA of less than 2.0 but earned a semester GPA of a minimum 2.0. 

Suspension: students on Continued Probation who fail to maintain a minimum 2.0 semester GPA will be placed on suspension.

• Suspension is for two consecutive semesters, including summer.

Suspension Appeal: If there were extenuating circumstances that contributed to the student's poor academic performance, the student may write a letter of appeal to the Office of the Provost prior to the next Appeals Committee meeting.

Academic Advising Centers on each campus serve Academic Warning and Academic Probation students. These students are required to meet with professional advisors in the Centers and complete Academic Success Plans prior to release for registration. During the meetings, advisors and students work together to review individual barriers to academic success and set goals and action steps for the future.

If you are returning to 1688¿ª½±Íø as an undergraduate student after being absent for at least 3 years from your intended date of re-enrollment, you may be eligible for academic renewal.

Rules and Eligibility:

You can be granted academic renewal only once.

• All your previously attempted coursework continues to be recorded on your official 1688¿ª½±Íø transcript.
• To earn a degree from 1688¿ª½±Íø after being granted academic renewal, you must meet 1688¿ª½±Íø's residency requirements. For an associate degree, you must complete a minimum of 15 hours in residence at the University of North Georgia.
• For a baccalaureate, you must complete a minimum of 30 hours in residence at 1688¿ª½±Íø, including at least 21 hours of upper division (3000 level or above) in your major field. You must also meet any additional residence requirements of your degree program. Applicability of retained credit to degree requirements will be determined by the degree requirements in effect at the time your academic renewal is approved.
• Coursework you completed more than 3 years prior to the date you intend to enroll or re-enroll (first day of classes) is eligible for academic renewal.
• Academic renewal granted by 1688¿ª½±Íø will be honored at all other USG (University System of Georgia) institutions and vice versa.
• Transfer and transient credit can be granted for coursework you took during the 3-year period of absence if that coursework is accepted by 1688¿ª½±Íø.
• Academic renewal GPA:
• Your academic renewal GPA will be used for determining your academic standing and eligibility for graduation.
• Retained grades of A, B or C are not calculated in your renewal GPA, but you will receive academic credit for these courses. Since you will not receive grades for your retained courses, there may be financial aid implications, and it could affect your admission to special academic programs like nursing, athletic training, or education.
• Courses in which you received grades of D or F must be repeated at 1688¿ª½±Íø if they are required for your degree program.
• Courses you took more recently than the 3-year period of absence are ineligible for consideration for academic renewal and will be factored into your GPA.
• Your renewal GPA starts when you resume taking coursework after your academic renewal is approved.

Applying for Academic Renewal:

If you're not academically eligible for admission to a bachelor's degree program, you will automatically be accepted for admission to an associate degree program on our Cumming, Gainesville, or Oconee Campus (there are no associate degree programs offered on our Dahlonega Campus).

You may apply for academic renewal during the admissions process. If you don't apply within one calendar year after the date you enroll or re-enroll, you will be ineligible for academic renewal. If you decide to do academic renewal after you enroll, contact the Registrar's Office.
